Chiang Saen is known as one of Thailand’s renowned homes to largest number of ancient historical sites. Lying on the west of the Mekong River, Chiang Saen natives live their life simply amid an abundance of the historical sites located through out the city. Current archeological evidences recount the city’s civilization trace and establishing history dated back over 1000 years. Between the 7th-10th centuries A.D., the city was referred to as “Suwan Kome Kam” according to the Chiang Saen city legend. The city was then re-titled as “Yonok Narkpan” or “Narkpan Singha Nawat Nakorn” in its second era. The city was renamed base on the belief that a naga named “Pan Naga Ratch” helped rebuilt the city during is second era and unfortunately the city submerged in a brook. The submerged city is currently a tourist attraction known as “Wiang Nong Lom” , literally means the city, which was once submerged in the brook. The city’s third era is “Hirun Nakorn Ngern Yang” era, in which numerous archeological evidences were discovered signifying its relevance to the Lanna Kingdom history. The city’s long legend makes it rise as an attractive and worth visiting destination.
Golden Triangle sites in Chiang Saen. The area is called such as it was the site for the notorious opium trade in the early days, The Maekong delta also forms a triangle in the region bounded by Laos on one side, Burma on the other and Thailand on the other side forming a Triangle. The Golden Triangle sounds in one mind as poorly interesting and spoiled region, somewhere in the North. This is not true and unfortunately, The whole region is really worth to discover and furthermore, one can easily use this region as gateway to neighborhood countries like Myanmar, Lao and even to P.R.of China, since the road was recently open up to Kunming, making accessible to legendary “Shangri-la” by land. Chiang Saen is now only hours from the old “Sip Song Pan Na” region (twelve thousand rice fields) and The “Thai Lua” tribe. Originally from the southern Chinese province of Yunnan.
